Around the World in 80 Days: New 2023 Edition
The World’s first ChatGPT-translated novel
I made this book to learn how to format and publish a book for both physical print and ebooks. Since I wanted to take this practice novel all the way to the storefront, I selected a public domain work and gave it my own spin, doing my best to treat the story with respect and thoroughness.
The timing of it also makes it (to my best knowledge) the world’s first full-scale AI-translation experiment, dated January 2023.
My version has the following features:
- An original translation using a base of ChatGPT output, then with my own skills in proofreading, linguistics and Japanese, with results more accurate than the 1874 translation.
- Footnotes at the end of every chapter that contains information on 1800s culture, plus translation notes. All is my own original research.
- Cultural research includes: 16th & 17th century literature from France & India, scientific language, 19th century Japanese, firearms, trade, currency, and inflation.
- A digitally painted replica of the original 1874 English first edition’s book cover.
- Two never-before-translated chapters from the 1872 newspaper – This story was originally a serial and two chapters were rewritten for novelisation.
